Garden of Villa Comunae. Built and developed by a English woman in the late 1800's.
Near the town of Piazza Armerina, about a two hour drive from Ortigia, is the largest collection of Roman mosaics. An entire villa, with many rooms, is being slowly excavated to reveal the rich and beautiful mosaic artwork that decorated a Roman palace dating from the 4th century. It includes an entire wall dedicated to female athletes, suggesting that women at that time participated in sports to the same extent as men.
